RYA Short Range Certificate (SRC) for Marine VHF - DSC
This one day/two evening course covers operation of marine VHF radios fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC). As part of the Global Maritime Distress & Safety System (GMDSS) the DSC facility automates many of the procedures traditionally carried out on channel 16. This qualification is a mandatory requirement for anyone wishing to use the new generation of DSC/GMDSS radios. The course assumes no prior knowledge, and covers all the theory required combined with practical experience on our training radios. It is suitable for any marine leisure user - including; Canal Boaters on the tidal Thames, windsurfers, kayakers, jet ski, kite surfers etc, Nautilus Lifeline .

£100 including manual + £76 (2025 rate) RYA Marine VHF -DSC license fee, as below

RYA SRC Marine VHF - DSC exam
£76 (2025 rate) RYA Marine VHF -DSC license fee payable to the RYA by Credit/Debit card - Visa, Mastercard or cheque (no cash). Exams are given on a 1:1 basic, there is no need to wait for a course.

Due to the recent course changes, it is no longer possible to take a direct exam unless you have one of the following:

  • Hold a Restricted Marine VHF license (old style upgrade) and have a copy of it.
  • Have atttended a RYA classroom based course and have the exam application form signed by the instructor.
  • Have completed the RYA Interactive course and have the completion certificate.

During the examination you will be given a practical assessment will be given on programming all aspects of DSC radios AND the RYA SRC exam consisting of written and multiple choice questions.

Take the RYA VHF SRC Marine practical exam at home
If you have taken the online course with another Centre, and would like to take the VHF exam at home or your office, we can come to you. For examinations in the London region, as a guide line the cost is £120 per visit - for one hour travel each way and the examination time. The cost of the online interactive course and the RYA exam fee still apply and remain the same. If there is more than one person taking the exam at your home or office, you just pay the additional interactive/exam costs per person.

Timuna Sea is a RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Shorebased Centre offering the VHF - DSC Short Range Radio course. DSC - Digital Select Calling is part of the new GMDSS - Global Maritime Distress and Safety System. Based in the London Docklands in West India Quay, Canary Wharf, London, E14 we are just a short distance from the City by either the Jubilee Line to Canary Wharf, or the DLR - Docklands Light Railway to West India Quay or Westferry. We can offer evening or weekend courses. This qualification is ideal for BSAC clubs with their own RIB's, Diver Coxswains, small boats, kayaks, canoes, jet skis, or yachts. If you are chartering a boat/yacht you will need a RYA Marine VHF license.
